Ms Mary Hattaway, Clinical Psychologist Registrar

Ms Mary Hattaway is an Associate at Joondalup Psychology Centre. Mary has had extensive, varied experience as a psychologist. As a school psychologist for several years, Mary has counselled students using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Solution Focused Therapy and Motivational Interviewing. She has assessed children and adolescents with special needs or learning difficulties and provided support to parents and teachers in managing difficult student behaviours. Mary has also worked as a Rehabilitation Psychologist for people who have suffered an Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) and provided psychological interventions for managing problem behaviour and counselling support.

Ms Mary HattawayOver the past 8 years, Mary has worked with survivors of sexual assault and childhood sexual abuse. Common interventions have included Imaginal and In Vivo Exposure, Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), CBT, elements of Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Mindfulness based interventions. Over the years, Mary has attained a broad variety of psychological knowledge and abilities and has become particularly skillful in developing a strong therapeutic working alliance with her clients.

Specialities and Areas of Interest

Mary has specialised in the treatment of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) during her work with survivors of sexual abuse. She is also skilled in the treatment of perfectionism, completing research on perfectionism and rumination in PSTD. Mary has a keen interest in Transdiagnostic theory, which looks at key maintaining mechanisms across disorders that keep clients stuck. Such maintaining factors include selective attention, avoidance, rumination and perfectionism. Mary is also interested in the use of Mindfulness based interventions for clients experiencing stress, anxiety and depression.
